Travel Support Requests are available for a limited number of participants (students, early career, and underrepresented countries) planning to attend the OceanObs’19 meeting. Please review the eligibility, evaluation criteria, and required documentation below.

Student requests:
Eligibility
- Eligible: 2 and 4 year undergraduate students, graduate students (must be a student at the time of the conference)
- Not Eligible: recent graduates and postdoctoral fellows
- Successfully-submitted abstract prior to filling out travel grant application
- First author presenting a paper or poster
- Sufficient additional funding resources (personal or outside resources) to cover the remainder of the meeting registration and travel expenses
Evaluation Criteria
Preference will be given to applicants from demographic groups who are underrepresented in the sciences. Applicants are initially rated for diversity and financial need. Applicants who pass the first round of selection based on those parameters are then reviewed on the following criteria:
- Students whose abstracts show strong scientific merit to application reviewers in their respective Sections/Focus Groups.
- Perceived impact the conference will have in helping the student develop as a scientist
Requirements
- Letter of Recommendation from Academic Advisor
- Applications must be complete and submitted before the deadline to be considered.
Underrepresented Country Requests:
Eligibility
- Eligibility for travel support is limited to participants under the age of 35 who are citizens of countries designated by the World Bank as “low” or “lower-middle” income per capita. Applicants must also currently reside in a World Bank “low” or “lower-middle” income per capita nation (does not need to be the same as citizenship).

- Applicants may not be already studying in the U.S.
Evaluation Criteria
Applications will be scored/judged on the following criteria:
- Does the applicant have sufficient resources to fund expenses (meals, local travel, and incidentals)) while at the meeting.
- Does the applicant have a clear understanding of how he/she will make the most out of his/her meeting experience.
- Scientific merit of applicant’s poster abstract.
- Applicants who identify as women, have never traveled to the United States, or are in the final year of their degree program will be scored higher than other applicants.
Requirements
- Applications must be complete to be considered and submitted before the deadline.
- Recipients must provide proof that they have applied for their travel visa and any transit visas before they are able to accept the offer of the support. Note: this may mean that you must be in your home country for the visa interview process.
