Research Scientist – Universities Space Research Association

USRA is an independent, nonprofit research corporation where the combined efforts of in-house talent and university-based expertise merge to advance space science and technology. USRA works across disciplines including biomedicine, planetary science, astrophysics, and engineering and integrates those competencies into applications ranging from fundamental research to facility management and operations. USRA engages the creativity and authoritative expertise of the research community to develop and deliver sophisticated, forward-looking solutions to Federal agencies and other customers – on schedule and within budget.

USRA seeks a Research Scientist  with proven publication record to work on the Goddard Earth Observing System (GEOS) Earth System modeling and analysis capabilities.   Potential research foci include interactions between land, atmosphere and ocean, with an emphasis on interactive study of the energy, water, or carbon cycles.  The incumbent is expected to work on improvements to the underlying model or analysis techniques and to use the GEOS systems in conjunction with NASA’s satellite observations to further understanding of the Earth System.   Applications of reanalysis systems or observing system simulation experiments, in the earth-system context, are also relevant themes.

Required Experience:

  • PhD in Earth Sciences or a related field.
  • Knowledge of structured programming languages and high-performance computing, as well as software packages for data processing and visualization.
