Postdoctoral Researcher, Southern Ocean Biochemistry – University of Hawai‘i’

SUMMARY: Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST), Department of Oceanography, Marine Geology and Geochemistry Division (MGGD), located in Honolulu, Hawai‘i.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

MONTHLY SALARY:  Salary commensurate with qualifications.

DUTIES:  Analyzes data from autonomous biogeochemical vehicles, research ships, satellites, and other sources to characterize Southern Ocean mode and intermediate water biogeochemistry and explore the mechanisms through which these waters acquire carbon and nutrients as they subduct into the ocean interior. Integrates observational data with state estimate output in collaboration with the Principal Investigator (PI) and co-PI. Works collaboratively with investigators to interpret biogeochemical data in context with larger physical processes and climate variability. Reports scientific results from research projects through talks at national and international meetings, and scientific papers in the peer-reviewed literature. Assists undergraduate and graduate students with related projects. Oversees and trains undergraduate and graduate students on data collection and analysis procedures. 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  PhD from an accredited college or university in Chemistry, Oceanography, Environmental Science, or related field. (PhD candidates may apply but must submit evidence of PhD completion upon hire).  EXPERIENCE:  One to three (1-3) years of previous research experience in chemical, biological, or physical oceanography.  ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  Strong knowledge of ocean biogeochemistry and data analysis techniques. Working knowledge of data quality control procedures and data visualizations. Ability to conduct research and work collaboratively with colleagues.  Strong communication and scientific writing skills. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:  Strong publication record, or other documented record of achievement. Experience working with autonomous profiling vehicles, model output, or satellite observations, familiarity with carbonate chemistry, and experience handling large data sets and coding experience.
