Postdoctoral Researcher position on autonomous marine observations
Description of the post/job
The Finnish Meteorological Institute is a high-profile research and service organization responsible for atmospheric, marine and space observations and research in Finland. Annually, the 600+ employees at the FMI publish more than 400 peer-reviewed articles in leading international journals, including Nature and Science.
We are seeking a motivated PostDoc Researcher with experience on autonomous marine observing platforms. A suitable person has previous experience (experimental and/or working with data) on marine research using gliders, Argo floats and/or other autonomous marine research instruments.
The tasks of the PostDoc Researcher include participating in experimental observations with gliders and Argo floats, analyzing data, publishing the results, participating in the writing of research funding proposals and other relevant work on European and national marine research infrastructures, like GROOM, EURO-ARGO, JERICO-RI and the Finnish Marine Research Infrastructure FINMARI.

Our expectations of the applicant
Candidates with a Ph.D. degree in a relevant field (oceanography, physics, environmental sciences, marine engineering, or limnology) will be considered. Furthermore, a successful candidate must meet the following essential criteria:
– Prior experience working with gliders, Argo floats and/or other autonomous marine observing platforms
– Experience in doing research and publishing the results in peer-reviewed journals
– Ability to analyze marine data and program using either Python (preferred) or Matlab
– Fluency in written and spoken English
– Good communication and interaction skills
Other desirable qualifications are
– Shown experience on successfully applied research funding
– Experience on research infrastructures
– Physical ability work from a small boat and from a research vessel on the sea.
Information about pay
Salary will be based on experience and performance according to the FMI salary scale, base levels 11-12. The total gross salary in the beginning of the work will be about 3500-4500 euros per month.
Other information about the job
The position will be in Helsinki, Finland and the researcher will work in the Marine Research Unit / Marine Observatories and Measurement Techniques research group. The position will require traveling.
