Postdoctoral Research Scientist – Columbia University

The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Scientist (PDRS) in the field of ocean macroturbulence. The PDRS will assist with research that studies flow at scales of 1-100km, which play an important role in lateral and vertical transport of ocean tracers. The PDRS will be expected to work on two complementary areas: (1) estimating macroturbulence relevant statistics from insitu current observations, in particular surface drifters and other quasi-Lagrangian observational platforms, and (2) using machine learning techniques to combine observations from sparse sensors (e.g., gliders, Argo floats, etc.) with high resolution ocean models, to derive data constrained estimates of high-resolution ocean state. The PDRS will be based at LDEO working with Dr. Dhruv Balwada as the P.I. and primary supervisor.
Qualifications:
- Candidates should have recently obtained or be nearing completion of a Ph.D. in Physical Oceanography, Meteorology, Engineering, Computer Science/Machine Learning or any dynamical climate science discipline is required.
- The position will be posted for at least 30 days after the add appears and will remain open until the position is filled. The starting base salary is $72,116.
