Postdoctoral Research Fellow in marine modelling – Norwegian Research Council

We have an open position as Postdoctoral Research Fellow in marine modelling. The position will be part of our well-established research activities on Arctic marine physical and biogeochemical processes. It is funded by the EU-project “The future of Arctic coastal ecosystems – Identifying transitions in fjord systems and adjacent coastal areas” (FACE-IT – https://www.face-it-project.eu/), and by the Norwegian Research Council project “The Nansen Legacy” (http://nansenlegacy.org).

The position is temporary for 3 years and belongs to the Arctic Ocean portfolio. This program consists of a wide range of projects that ensure interdisciplinary environmental management research. You will be employed in Section for Ecotoxicology in our Research Department. The section conducts research on the effects of climate change, pollutants and plastic on biogeochemistry, food webs and species health in Arctic marine regions.

Your work place will be Tromsø, Norway. Some travels may be expected due to visits and collaboration with both national and international project partners.

Work content

You will work with modelling based on existing regional (European Arctic) and local (fjord) three-dimensional models. Your work will contribute to better understanding the consequences of warming on ocean and sea-ice physics and biogeochemistry. You will specifically:

  • contribute in the refinement of process representation in models
  • carry out model testing and evaluation against observations
  • carry out model scenario analysis considering several drivers of change
  • write and publish articles on your results

Qualifications

You must hold a completed PhD in Marine sciences or other related field such as Physical Oceanography.

A Norwegian doctoral degree or equivalent doctoral degree from a foreign university is required. You are welcome to apply if you have not completed your doctoral dissertation yet, but you must then provide documentation that your dissertation has been submitted for evaluation before the position’s closing date. An approved public defence of your doctoral thesis is a prerequisite for employment.

In addition to your PhD we would like you to have:

  • experience with 3D ocean numerical model systems
  • programming skills in FORTRAN
  • experience with super-computers and with the Linux environment
  • previously worked with coupled ocean-sea ice models
  • previously worked with coupled physical-biogeochemical models
  • good MatLab skills

Remember to include an updated publication list. We will emphasize your publication record and what journals they are published in. It is in your favour if you already have connections within international research networks.

You will collaborate with colleagues at the Norwegian Polar Institute and collaborators within the projects, so good collaborative skills are necessary. You will, of course, also work individually. This implies that you need to determine what type of work that needs to be done and to conduct it in the best possible way.

In addition to communicating, you are expected to deliver reports, publications etc., and thus, your written and oral communication must be good in English. Our working language is Norwegian, so knowledge of the Norwegian language will carry weight in the assessment. If you do not speak Norwegian you are expected to attend language courses within the first two years of your employment since communicating in Norwegian will be important for you, as well as for the institute. We pay for completed and passed courses.
