We seek a talented post-doctoral scientist to carry out research to better understand the atmospheric controls of the meridional overturning in the subpolar North Atlantic Ocean using diagnostics of coupled climate models. This research is an important component of a recently funded UKRI-NERC research project, Dynamics and predictability of the Subpolar North Atlantic Ocean (SNAP-DRAGON), involving research groups at the Universities of Oxford and Liverpool, the UK Meteorological Office and other research institutions in the U.K. and U.S. Our part of the research project aims to provide a modelling interpretation on the results of the Overturning in the Subpolar North Atlantic Programme (OSNAP, ukosnap.org, o-snap.org), which has recently made the first ever sustained observations of the large-scale overturning in the subpolar North Atlantic.
To understand the role of the atmospheric forcing on the subpolar North Atlantic and wider climate system, you will analyse large sets of model ensembles from projections and hindcasts of state-of-the-art coupled atmosphere-ocean model simulations performed by the U.K. Met Office. The sensitivity of the ocean to the atmospheric jet stream will be assessed from the predicted spread in model ensembles, which differ slightly in their initial perturbations. The predictability of the meridional overturning will be assessed by comparing the projections of the coupled model using ensembles with different ocean states. You should have a PhD in a relevant discipline. The post is available until 31st May 2023.
