Postdoctoral Research Associate Position – University of Colorado

Marine Heatwaves & Climate Postdoctoral Research Associate Position

The Department of Atmospheric & Oceanic Sciences at the University of Colorado invites applications for a postdoctal research associate position to conduct innovative research for understanding marine heatwaves (MHWs) and climate projects with Weiqing Han in collaboration with other institutions, including the Texas A & M University. The primary areas of research are to investigate the generation mechanisms of marine heatwaves (MHWs) over the Indian Ocean and their effects on the atmosphere, explore the excess heat and freshwater distributions from the Indonesian Throughflow associated with interdecadal climate variability and change, and understand their association with the extreme events. The approach is to combine observational analysis using statistic tools with modeling experiments using ocean general circulation model (OGCM) and coupled ocean-atmosphere model (e.g., OGCM coupled to a simple atmospheric boundary layer model).

Applications should include Curriculum Vitae with a publication list, a cover letter that describes previous and current research activities and qualifications, and 3 names of references. At the time of appointment, the successful candidate should have a Ph.D. degree in physical oceanography, atmospheric or climate sciences. Data analysis skills are required and modeling experience – particularly for running OGCM, AGCM, or coupled climate models – is preferred. Initial appointment is for one year with possible renewal for the second year or longer contingent upon performance and availability of funds. For further information please contact Weiqing Han at whan@colorado.edu. Applications will continue to be accepted until the position is filled. The position may start in October, 2023 or on a mutually agreeable date.
