Postdoctoral positions – Scripps Institution of Oceanography and University of Edinburgh
Two postdoctoral positions in Physical Oceanography and Geophysical Fluid Dynamics
Two 24-month postdoctoral positions are offered as part of a research project co-funded by NSF and NERC at the
- Scripps Institution of Oceanography, supervised by W R Young, and
- University of Edinburgh, supervised by J Vanneste.
The project is devoted to the role played by internal waves in the energetics of the ocean. It will examine stimulated loss of balance, the process whereby wind-forced near-inertial waves and internal tides extract kinetic energy from the balanced mesoscale flow. The project combines the derivation and analysis of simplified theoretical models with numerical code development and simulations.
Candidates should hold a PhD by the start date. They will have a strong background in fluid dynamics and expertise of numerical modelling, evidenced by publications. Expertise in oceanography or atmospheric sciences is desirable.
The start date for both positions is to be agreed, around 1 January 2018. Interested candidates should email W R Young, wryoung@ucsd.edu, for the Scripps position, J Vanneste, j.vanneste@ed.ac.uk, for the Edinburgh position, or both.
