Postdoctoral Position – Institut des Géosciences de l’Environnement (IGE, Grenoble)

The Institut des Géosciences de l’Environnement (IGE, Grenoble) will host a 18-month postdoctoral appointment in Physical Oceanography beginning in early 2019, with an optional 18-month renewal.

The objective of the research will be the study of surface submesoscale phenomenaand the design of submesoscale closuresfor eddy-resolving numerical ocean models (with resolution ~1/12°). The proposed research will use the 1/60° North Atlantic simulations recently performed at IGE (see links below) in order to analyse how submesoscale turbulence affects kinetic energy budgets, tracer transport and vertical exchanges within and across the ocean surface boundary layer. The design of submesoscale closures will involve dynamical analysis. We also have interests in data-driven approaches based on Machine Learning.

This post doctoral position will contribute to the “Consistent OceaN Turbulence for ClimaTe Simulators (CONTaCTS)” project, funded through the “Make Our Planet Great Again” program initiated by French President Emmanuel Macron and administered through Agence Nationale de la Recherche (ANR). The successful postdoctoral candidate will work closely with program Laureate W.K. Dewar (Florida State University) and IGE CNRS Scientists T. Penduff, B. Barnier and J.Le Sommer (see links below) . He/she will also be encouraged to develop his/her own research within the general context of the project.

Applicants should hold a PhD in physical oceanography, atmospheric sciences, or fluid mechanics (turbulence). A track record of publications on fine-scale ocean dynamics or scale interactions in turbulent flows will be most appreciated. A strong background in geophysical fluid dynamics and/or applied mathematics is also expected.

The proposed annual gross salary will be between 42.000€ and 45.600€ depending on the applicant’s experience, which includes health insurance through the French national health care.

Applications will be reviewed beginning immediately, and will be received until the position is filled. Those applications received by the end of December 2018 will receive a full review. Applicants should send a letter of interest and a CV to wdewar@fsu.edu.
