Postdoctoral Investigator – WHOI

Influence of Arctic – Lower-Latitude Interactions on Weather and Climate Variability

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) invites applications for a postdoctoral investigator to study influence of Arctic–lower latitude interactions on weather and climate variability with a team of scientists from WHOI (Young-Oh Kwon and Claude Frankignoul) and NCAR (Gokhan Danabasoglu and Steve Yeager). The project aims to investigate the tropical and mid-latitude (collectively referred to as lower latitudes) oceanic and atmospheric drivers of regional Arctic changes as well as the impact of Arctic variability on the Northern Hemisphere climate and weather extremes, based on a combination of available observations and state-of-the-art climate models. Additionally, the proposed work will contribute to a European Union-led international collaboration, the Blue- Action Project (http://blue-action.eu/). The postdoctoral investigator will be primarily responsible for numerical experiments designed to establish the influence of Arctic changes on the lower latitudes.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE DESIRED:

  • Recent Ph.D. degree (or nearly completed) in atmospheric science, oceanography, or other relevant discipline.
  • Prior experience in global climate modeling, preferably with the Community Earth System Model (CESM), with ability to modify the component models to setup the planned simulations
  • Some understanding of Arctic climate and its relationship with lower latitude climate and weather
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, as evidenced preferably through publications in peer-reviewed scientific literature and presentations to a variety of audiences

The position will be located at WHOI in Woods Hole, MA with the expectation of extended visits to NCAR to collaborate directly with the NCAR Co-PIs. WHOI has a top-rated postdoctoral program (www.whoi.edu/postdoctoral/) that supports a dynamic postdoctoral community with formal mentoring and career guidance programs. This position is full-time and eligible for benefits. The initial appointment will be for one year with a possibility of renewal for another year. Renewal of the appointment is conditional on the postdoctoral investigator making satisfactory progress during the initial year. Start date is flexible, but the successful candidate could begin immediately.

Qualified applicants should submit a cover letter, CV, up to three relevant publications, and contact information for at least three professional references. Please apply online at: http://www.whoi.edu/HR/page.do?pid=21135. For further information please contact Young-Oh Kwon (yokwon@whoi.edu).
