Postdoctoral Fellowship – U.S. GO-SHIP

U.S. GO-SHIP (Repeat Hydrography) Postdoctoral Fellowship

U.S. GO-SHIP (Global Ocean Ship-based Hydrographic Investigations Program) is pleased to announce a series of one-year NSF-funded postdoctoral fellowships to foster participation in analysis and collection of data within the U.S. GO-SHIP repeat hydrographic observations program (http://ushydro.ucsd.edu), which is part of the international GO-SHIP program (http://www.go-ship.org). GO-SHIP collects highly accurate, full water column, multiple-parameter observations on trans-oceanic sections for investigation of large-scale physical and/or biogeochemical oceanographic processes relevant to climate.

The postdoc can be resident at the institution of any U.S. GO-SHIP principal investigator during the fellowship, although fellowships will be administered through the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Incumbents will serve as co-chief scientist on one leg of a U.S. GO-SHIP cruise (see http://ushydro.ucsd.edu/hydrotable/ for cruise list) during their fellowship. Opportunities in 2016 include four legs on two U.S. GO-SHIP transects, one in the Indian Ocean along ~90°E (“I8S/I9N”) from Antarctica to the Bay of Bengal, and the other in the eastern Pacific from Baja to the Antarctic Circle along ~103°W (“P18”).

Interested applicants should identify a mentor or mentors from the list of U.S. GO-SHIP principle investigators (see http://ushydro.ucsd.edu/people/), contact them, and, in consultation with them, develop a short one-to-two page research plan for a scientific investigation incorporating analysis of GO-SHIP data.

Candidates must have received a Ph.D. in oceanography, earth sciences, applied math, or the physical, chemical, or biological sciences. Training in physical oceanography, biogeochemistry, and/or climate science is strongly preferred, along with strong quantitative, modeling, and/or statistical skills. An ability and interest to work across these disciplines, and at sea, is highly desirable. Initial appointment is for 1 year with possibility of extension through support from the postdoc mentor.

In addition to the research plan for analysis of GO-SHIP data, applicants should submit a curriculum vitae, a statement of research experience and interests, and a list of three references with their contact information, to Prof. Lynne Talley (ltalley@ucsd.edu). Applications will be reviewed by the oversight committee.

The deadline for applications for this first year is Oct. 15, 2015. Applications will remain open until the position is filled.

The University of California, San Diego is an AA/EOE.
