Postdoctoral Fellowship – Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute
The Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) is currently seeking a postdoc to join the team. The postdoc will work on a multi-institutional, NSF-funded project to evaluate carbon cycling in the North Atlantic Ocean using observations from biogeochemical (BGC) profiling floats and satellites. In general, remote sensing algorithms predict a much larger meridional gradient in the strength of the biological pump compared to geochemical approaches. This discrepancy remains a major shortcoming in our understanding of biological pump functionality on the global scale. The goal of this project is to develop scalable methods combining BGC float and remotely sensed data for accurate and sustained quantification of the biological carbon pump. The postdoc will lead efforts in data analysis and interpretation, project reporting, manuscript preparation, and the sharing and presentation of results with project collaborators and the broader scientific community. The project effort will be conducted from Seattle at NOAA’s Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory in conjunction with the MBARI Chemical Sensor Lab.
A Ph.D. in chemical oceanography, a related field, or experience with biogeochemical profiling float data is required. The ideal candidate will have experience working with tracer budgets and/or autonomous sensor data. Prior research related to the biological carbon pump and familiarity with profiling float and remote sensing data would be helpful but is not required. Proficiency working with large observational datasets will be necessary.
Note that this is a one-year term appointment, with a possible extension depending on the availability of funding and job performance.
