Postdoctoral fellow – University of Maryland, College Park

The Earth System Sciences Interdisciplinary Center (ESSIC), at the University of Maryland College Park(UMD), in conjunction with the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC), is seeking a postdoctoral fellow to work on coupled ocean-ice-atmosphere modeling and data assimilation (DA) in the context of inter-annual to decadal prediction.

The position is to be filled as soon as possible. The successful candidate will work in a multi-institution team, comprising researchers at UMD, GSFC, MIT, JPL, and UT Austin. The postdoctoral fellow will be based at NASA GSFC and is expected to undertake extensive visits to collaborating institutions. The initial appointment is for one year with possible extension for an additional two years.

Responsibilities:
The project involves developing and analysing a novel prototype, property-conserving, ocean-ice-atmosphere model and DA system based on the Goddard Earth Observing System Model (GEOS) in conjunction with the adjoint-model capabilities of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology general circulation model (MITgcm). The resulting DA system and inferred solution will be used to study inter-annual to decadal prediction and predictability in the coupled system. The initial period of scientific interest covers the satellite altimetric record (1992 to present).

Qualifications:
Candidates should have a recent Ph.D. in Physical Oceanography, Atmospheric Sciences, Climate Dynamics, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related field, with a strong interest in Earth System models, observations, and science questions. Experience in numerical modeling (especially with GEOS or MITgcm), data assimilation, and observational data analysis is highly desirable. Familiarity with supercomputing environments and related programming languages (in particular Linux and Fortran), as well as analysis tools (Matlab or Python) are essential. Written and oral communication skills sufficient to lead manuscripts and present research at conferences are also desirable.

To Apply: Interested candidates should send a CV with a list of at least 3 professional references and a cover letter explaining how your qualifications meet the posted requirements to andrea.molod@nasa.gov
