We are looking for a talented observational physical oceanographer to join the Marine Physics and Ocean Climate Group at the National Oceanography Centre (NOC) in Southampton on a permanent basis.
About the role:
The purpose of this role is to contribute to the leadership, management and delivery of projects within the Marine Physics and Ocean Climate (MPOC) Group. These projects, led by Dr Elaine McDonagh (Associate Head of MPOC) include:
- Transient Tracer based investigation of Circulation and Thermal Ocean Change (TICTOC; http://projects.noc.ac.uk/tictoc/) that will investigate the distribution, evolution and controls of added (due to global warming) and redistributed (circulation-driven) temperature change
- Atlantic Biogeochemical (ABC) fluxes (https://www.rapid.ac.uk/abc/) that is adding carbon to the RAPID array and investigating the impact of circulation variability on the uptake of carbon in the North Atlantic.
The role will focus on analysis of observations including those from GO-SHIP repeat hydrography, Argo and the RAPID array. This analysis will inform the role of circulation and water mass property variability on the oceanic uptake of heat and carbon.
Key responsibilities include:
- Undertaking observation-based research of the Ocean’s role in the climate system with a main focus on heat uptake and circulation variability and a secondary focus on the physical controls of carbon uptake
- Presenting and publishing results in leading journal and conferences
- Assisting the Principal Investigator with project leadership and scientific management
- Developing a personal portfolio of research funding
There will be the opportunity to participate in research cruises.
This role is designed for a talented research scientist who is an emerging or potential Principal Investigator. You will undertake novel research to deliver funded programs and assist the Principal investigator with the scientific leadership and management of those multi centre and international programs. You will be an excellent communicator, with the ability to work well in a team as well as individually.
The starting salary for this position will be between £35,222 and £40,505 per annum (Band 5). Depending upon skills and experience, additional allowances may be available for exceptional candidates.
Although the post is advertised as full-time, we would also consider part-time appointments with the option of job-sharing.
For part time posts, the salary will be calculated on a pro rata basis and all part time employees will have full access to NERC benefits.
