Moorings technician, NIWA, New Zealand

NIWA are seeking an enthusiastic and skilled technician to join the ocean observations team in support of coastal and off-shore measurement programmes around New Zealand, Antarctica, and in the Southern Ocean. The position will provide expert technical support particularly for moorings and moored instrumentation. This spans mooring design, component acquisition, mooring construction, seagoing mobilisation and demobilisation, deployment and recovery from a variety of platforms, along with data extraction, processing and management. It includes a requirement to participate in field campaigns including scientific voyages. Experience with DART buoys would be an advantage.

Candidates should have a tertiary qualification in physical sciences or engineering and have well-developed field skills in operating and maintaining scientific equipment as well as the experience and confidence to take sole charge of instrumentation. They will also need data processing and analysis skills for the processing and interpretation of field data.
