Lecturer/Associate Professor in Physical Oceanography – National Oceanography Centre Southampton

We are seeking to make a Faculty appointment in the area of Ocean and Earth Science as part of a series of 4 new appointments to further enhance our research-led education and extend the international reach of our research and enterprise activities. This will be the first part of a series planned appointments over the next five years. You will have an exciting opportunity to influence the Ocean and Earth sciences agenda within a world leading school at the University of Southampton.  Our School takes pride in research that spans marine biology and ecologyphysical oceanographypalaeoceanography and paleoclimatemarine biogeochemistrygeology and geophysics and geochemistry. We lead the prestigious NERC INSPIRE Doctoral Training Programme (DTP) and are home to one of the largest graduate schools in Ocean and Earth Science in the world, with >150 PhD students. We are integral to both the interdisciplinary Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute and Institute for Life Sciences. We are home to the only Regius Chair in Ocean Sciences in the country. Based at the National Oceanography Centre Southampton site we have a range of unique and world class facilities. We collaborate broadly both nationally and internationally, including our close collaborative relationships with the independent National Oceanography Centre

You will have a growing international profile in an aspect of physical oceanography and add to our thriving research programs at the interfaces between ocean, earth and climate and its impact on society. The School is exceptionally well-equipped for innovative research that addresses major societal issues, including the role of ocean circulation on the global climate system, the influence of ocean-atmosphere coupling on climate variability and change, operational ocean forecasting, the interaction between physical and biogeochemical processes in shelf seas, and the impact of sea-level rise and flooding on the coast communities and ecosystems. 

We are especially interested in applicants working on research questions related to ice sheet modelling and polar ocean dynamics, or those working on research relating to the influence of ocean-atmosphere coupling on climate variability and change. The successful candidate will have an exciting opportunity to build a long-term programme that complements existing strengths in this area within the School of Ocean and Earth Science and the wider University. You will have opportunities to collaborate with colleagues whose research spans from local through to global scales, from offshore, across shelf seas, to the coast, addressing major environmental challenges as we enter the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.

You will demonstrate a passion for education and an ability to enhance our undergraduate and postgraduate curriculum in Ocean and Earth science.

Strong applicants should demonstrate:

  • A doctorate and postdoctoral experience in a relevant discipline
  • Ability to obtain peer-reviewed funding
  • Evidence of distinction in research through high-quality publications
  • Ability for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
