Lecturer/Associate Professor in Climate Sciences – National Oceanography Centre Southampton

Ocean and Earth Science at Southampton is expanding. We are making a substantial number of new full academic appointments over the next two to three years to grow our research and enterprise activities, to enhance our research-led education portfolio and extend our international reach.

As part of this process, we are seeking to appoint enthusiastic colleagues to further grow our research profile in Climate Science at the Lecturer or Associate Professor level.

We invite applications from candidates in all areas of climate science, and particularly those with interdisciplinary interests and ambitions. Specific areas of research interest could include: global and regional climate-Earth system modelling, analysis of observational and modelled data sets, ocean and atmosphere circulation, ocean-atmosphere interactions, climate-cryosphere dynamics, organism-environment interactions and/or adaptations in a changing climate, and climate-Earth system changes on anthropogenic and palaeo timescales.

The School of Ocean and Earth Science (SOES) is based at the National Oceanography Centre Southampton (NOCS), on the University’s Waterfront Campus. NOCS brings together over 500 researchers and support staff drawn from physics, chemistry, biology, geoscience and engineering. NOCS is one of the largest and most successful marine science institutions in the world. Our Graduate School hosts around 150 PhD students and we graduate over 250 undergraduate and masters students every year. SOES holds the UK’s Regius Chair in Ocean Sciences, has state-of-the-art facilities (including high performance computing, experimental facilities and laboratories) and is integral to the Southampton Marine & Maritime Institute and the Institute for Life Sciences that promote interdisciplinary research.

The climate emergency is one of the key challenges facing humanity today and SOES is committed to creating new knowledge of the Ocean and Earth system that can unlock solutions to mitigate and/or manage the effects of climate change. Candidates should have a PhD or equivalent experience in a field related to climate science, and a demonstrated record for high-impact research commensurate with the level of appointment. They will contribute to our rigorous and vibrant programme of teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and should have a strong commitment to inspire future generations of scientists through the delivery of high-quality education. They will create collaborative partnerships with stakeholders to exchange knowledge and realise their potential to deliver impact.

We welcome applications from all candidates with an interest in the role, and those who are committed to helping us create an inclusive work environment. We encourage applications from candidates from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities, people who identify as LGBTQ+ and people with disabilities.

The closing date for applications is Monday 23 May 2022. Interviews will take place in person starting in July 2022.
