The Department of Ocean Systems (OCS; headed by prof. dr. Gert-Jan Reichart) is looking for a highly motivated junior scientist (tenure track) or a senior scientist in observational Physical Oceanography with an extensive track record based on seagoing research and a focus on the deeper parts of the ocean.
Researchers working within OCS aim to understand the role of the oceans in regulating global biogeochemical cycles, primary productivity and climate. Within this framework, one of the key objectives within the department is to investigate the dark, deep sea. This part of the ocean remains largely unexplored and therefore yields surprises almost every time we visit it.
As our new junior – or senior scientist, you will help us investigating processes in physical oceanography across spatial scales, partly by actively participating in seagoing oceanographic research. During your research you will apply modern observational techniques, including moored instruments, landers, shipborne CTD and a free-falling microstructure profiler. These approaches will help you to understand the interactions between physical processes, the sea floor topography and impacts on ocean biology in the deep ocean.
In our research we actively collaborate with peers in (inter)national partner institutes, including the Institute for Marine and Atmospheric research Utrecht (IMAU) and the Faculty of Earth Sciences of Utrecht University, as well as e.g., MARUM – Center for Marine Environmental Sciences in Bremen and the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI) in Bremerhaven, Germany.
We are looking for an explorative observational physical oceanographer with an extensive track record based on seagoing research, focusing on the deeper parts of the ocean. You will use your experience and creativity to answer pressing and emerging questions regarding the interaction between the sea floor topography and impact on e.g. deep-sea sedimentology, geochemistry and biology.
You are expected to acquire research grants that involve the use of the Royal NIOZ research vessel RV Pelagia and to actively conjoin in the departmental multidisciplinary environment, together with chemical oceanographers and benthic ecologists. You will also cooperate with the researchers from other Royal NIOZ departments.
The inter-disciplinary and international research environment at the Royal NIOZ suits you well, and you have a strong command of the English language in speaking and writing.
Employment of this position at Royal NIOZ is by NWO (The Netherlands Organization of Scientific Research). In case the position is offered at the tenure-track level, the candidate will be hired for 5 years. At the end of a successful tenure track term, a permanent scientific staff position will be offered up to the level of senior scientist. Criteria for evaluation comprise a track record of publications that is far above average, proven skills in acquiring funding, and an international network.
We offer an excellent salary, a pension scheme, a holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary, a year-end bonus and flexible work arrangements. The position comes with the opportunity to set-up a PhD project in the same direction as the (tenure track) position.
