Assistant Professor position – University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo
Assistant Professor (Marine Science/Physical Oceanographer):
UH Hilo, College of Arts & Sciences, tenure-track, full-time, general funds, nine-month appointment to begin approximately August 2014, pending position clearance and availability of funding.
Duties
Teach undergraduate and MS level graduate courses on campus and on board the department’s research vessels, including: undergraduate Oceanography lecture and laboratory, Global Change, Coastal and/or Pelagic Methods and Analyses, Physical Oceanography, Senior Thesis, and undergraduate and graduate courses in the applicant’s specialty (9 credits/semester with potential for buyouts); conduct research and publish results on physical oceanography; advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students; engage in scholarly activities; participate in departmental, community, and university service; possibly participate in summer courses for additional compensation.
Minimum Qualifications
A Ph.D. in Physics or Oceanography or closely related discipline with successful comparable experience and/or scholarship in the area of physical oceanography; Ph.D. must be completed prior to the start of employment; relevant publications; demonstrated expertise in teaching at the university level; and experience mentoring student research.
Desirable Qualifications
Post-doctoral experience; field research experience; demonstrated ability to acquire external research funding; the ability and a plan to develop 1) coastal oceanography research, 2) research in Hawaiʻi and the insular Pacific region, 3) collaboration with colleagues on integrated research, and 4) incorporating undergraduates in research.
