The Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Northwestern University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the field of geophysics, broadly considered, to begin as soon as Fall 2020.

We seek a scholar whose expertise and creativity will complement and expand the Department’s strengths. Area(s) of specialization within solid-Earth, environmental or planetary geophysics are open and may include any aspect of geodesy, seismology, dynamic topography, geophysical fluid dynamics, hazards, climate, or planetary science across spatiotemporal scales. Applicants are likely to employ emerging technologies in remote sensing, machine learning, numerical methods, and/or field instrumentation. Applicants whose research reveals linkages between physical processes and societal impacts are particularly encouraged to apply.
The successful candidate is expected to teach both undergraduate and graduate courses and lead a vibrant externally funded research program. A Ph.D. is required at the time of appointment, but is not required to apply. The application deadline is 12/16/19. Questions may be directed to earth@northwestern.edu.

Applications will only be accepted through our online form. Please make sure all documents are prepared in advance and you are ready to complete your application in one sitting. Partial applications will not be accepted and cannot be saved and returned to at a later date for completion. Please be sure all information is entered completely and accurately (especially names and email addresses). There will be no opportunity for online revision once your application has been submitted. Please be prepared to submit a letter of application, curriculum vitae, research statement, teaching statement, and the names and emails of at least three references.

All uploaded files must be in Adobe PDF format. Documents must not exceed 8 MB in size, so be sure to minimize the size of any large PDF files before uploading. File names should not contain parentheses, quotation marks, or other such characters; the system will likely not accept such documents.

At least three names and email addresses for external references are required, though additional references may be requested. After your completed online application has been reviewed by the committee, if your application is selected to continue on for further consideration, your references will automatically be emailed instructions for uploading a letter of recommendation. Once again, please be sure all email addresses are entered correctly with no spelling errors; otherwise your references will not receive the instructions.

When your PDF files and list of references are complete, you may proceed to the Online Application. All required fields must be filled in before you click the “Submit Application” button. The system will not accept incomplete applications.

Review of applications is ongoing, with an application deadline of December 16, 2019. You will receive an email confirmation shortly after your application has been received and a follow-up email to alert you once a determination on your initial application status has been completed.
