POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Bodega Marine Laboratory, under the Coastal Marine Sciences Institute, an organized Center of the Office of Research, is recruiting for an Academic Administrator to manage outreach programs in the coastal marine sciences, to coordinate undergraduate and graduate coastal marine science education programs, and to link development efforts with long-term strategies and planning for public education and outreach in Sonoma County.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
I. ADMINISTRATION/MANAGEMENT OF PROGRAMS (90%)
a. Management of CMSI/BML Outreach Programs (45%)
In collaboration with BML and CMSI leadership, develops and executes a strategy for BML outreach activities that achieve public service, revenue generation, science communication training and donor cultivation goals, to further develop community understanding of the University, BML, and coastal and marine sciences. Strategy will include K-12 programs for regional schools, teacher-training workshops, custom educational events and experiences for specific groups, broad outreach events and experiences open to the general public, and collaborations with fee-based educational programs from UC Davis and other institutions.
Works with BML’s Lab Manager, faculty, students and staff to coordinate the introduction of ongoing new information to train volunteer docents to improve scientific interpretation. Develops an orientation program and hosts regular training sessions and workshops to enhance the docent’s connection and delivery of education information to the public. Integrates new training to include more emphasis of the Natural Reserve. Identifies, mentors, and supervises talent that could serve to implement and offer specialized tours.
b. Coordination of CMSI/BML Undergraduate and Graduate Education Programs (30%)
Provides coordination of undergraduate academic programs at BML, including coordination with BML faculty, staff, and on-campus advisors and departments. Serves as a liaison with CMSI and other campus administrators/advisors for MCS (Marine and Coastal Science) and other majors. Coordinates and manages CMSI/BML presence at recruitment events – Decision Days, Picnic Day, etc. Works with CMSI to coordinate select programs for graduate students; for example, coordinating the application and selection of fellowship recipients, or designing and implementing education and outreach training programs.
c. Administration (15%)
Acts as spokesperson for BML to link media with lab specialists on areas of interest and coordinate with CMSI Marketing and Communications and UC Davis Strategic Communications. Provides input into development of Bodega Conference and Learning Center to ensure education and outreach priorities and long-term strategy are incorporated into planning. Identifies, prepares and submits grants to fund programs. Coordinates with CMSI’s marketing and development staff to develop new marketing and promotional collateral materials that enhance visitor experience and philanthropic support. Develops and maintains a network of connections with community groups, teachers, schools, businesses and scientists in order to support education and outreach efforts in Sonoma County.
II. PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (5%)
Attends seminars and other lectures related to marine and coastal sciences and maintains a current understanding of the research conducted by professors, graduate students, and other researchers at BML and CMSI. Participates in training activities to enhance professional development, such as administrative trainings, professional conferences, or workshops. Gives presentations to community groups as well as lectures in graduate and undergraduate courses. May serve as an instructor, as time permits, for undergraduates at BML.
III. UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (5%)
Participates in departmental meetings and committees as needed. Acts as a liaison with the community via outreach program administration as described above. Acts as a liaison with other public and private agencies, for example the National Association of Marine Laboratories (NAML) educators. Engages with other Universities and other University of California campuses about programmatic advancements and events.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Qualifications
• Doctoral degree in marine or environmental science, or related discipline
• Experience in teaching/lecturing, laboratory instruction at the undergraduate college level
• Experience in supervision and training of undergraduates, graduate students in academic and public outreach settings
• Experience in conducting outreach education experiences for K-12 students
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work with diverse groups of faculty, students, and the public
• Skills to organize, coordinate and evaluate effectiveness of education and public outreach programs
Additional Qualifications
• Experience in outreach efforts in the recruitment of undergraduate students to UC Davis marine science-related majors
Preferred Qualifications
• Public speaking experience
• Demonstrated grant-writing skills

Located in Bodega Bay, California, BML and its surrounding 362-acre Bodega Marine Reserve provide research and instructional facilities for resident and campus-based faculty, researchers and students. About 100 scientists maintain active research and teaching programs, more than 50 graduate students conduct research on the site, and there are about 50 employees under a variety of policies and collective bargaining agreements. In addition, the Laboratory hosts many US and international visiting scientists, and hosts conferences and retreats.
