CEOAS Cluster Hire
The College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences (CEOAS) at Oregon State University invites applications for four (4) research-focused, tenure-track, open rank professor positions, who maintain or have the potential to maintain sea-going research programs. This is a cluster hire that promotes interdisciplinary research across four focus areas: Biological Oceanography, Chemical Oceanography, Physical Oceanography, and Marine Geology and Geophysics. Applications to more than one position is suggested for candidates with interdisciplinary focus.
We seek faculty members who will develop and maintain vigorous, externally funded, sea-going research programs. We particularly welcome applications from individuals with interests that complement or strengthen existing CEOAS research areas, and will instigate new and innovative college- and university-wide, national and international oceanographic research programs. The faculty members will participate in the CEOAS undergraduate and graduate teaching programs, and in the advising and mentoring of graduate students and post-doctoral scholars.
Specific areas of interest include, but are not limited to, plankton physiology, phytoplankton ecology, evolutionary ecology, and/or benthic ecology with a focus on connections to biogeochemistry, biophysics, or paleoceanography.

Specific areas of interest include, but are not limited to, marine pelagic-, sediment-, or rock-fluid (bio)geochemistry, ocean chemical sensor development and applications, ocean chemical cycles and their paleoceanographic reconstruction, and physical chemistry of gases, fluids, and solids in marine environments including estuaries, seeps, and vents.

Each position is full-time (1.0 FTE) for 12 months. Salary is competitive and will be commensurate with experience. There is an expectation that the successful candidate will secure external research funding to support 60% of his/her full-time salary. For research-focused positions, it is CEOAS policy to confer indefinite tenure when promoted to full Professor, with the indefinite tenure granted on the basis of a 12-month (0.75 FTE) appointment. Required Qualifications for All Ranks
- PhD in the Earth or Ocean Sciences or related disciplines by the start of the employment.
- A strong scholarly potential demonstrated in the record of peer-reviewed publications.
- A clearly defined sea-going research agenda commensurate with academic rank.
- Potential for establishing an externally funded research program, demonstrated by the articulation of compelling scientific goals and proposed methods to achieve those goals.
- Potential for excellence in teaching and mentoring, demonstrated by past and present teaching experience as a teaching assistant or instructor of record, courses designed and taught, and commitment to scientific methods and discipline.
- Proficiency in oral and written English.
- A commitment to educational equity in a multicultural setting and to advancing the participation of diverse groups and supporting diverse perspectives.
Additional Required Qualifications for Associate Professor Rank
- Establishment of a successful research program evidenced by publication and funding records, with demonstrated progress toward national and international recognition.
- Demonstrated experience designing and conducting sea-going research.
Additional Required Qualifications for Full Professor Rank
- An established and sustained research program with national and international recognition, evidenced by publication and funding records.
- Demonstrated experience designing, conducting, and leading sea-going research.

The College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences (CEOAS) is renowned for excellence in basic and applied research on the global Earth system that governs all its interacting physical, chemical, biological, and geological processes and the human dimensions within these. Our work extends from the Pacific Northwest to both poles, from the bottom of the ocean to the upper reaches of the atmosphere, to studies of other planets in our solar system. CEOAS operates state-of-the-art laboratories, a node for the Ocean Observatory Initiative (OOI), the OSU Marine and Geology Repository (OSU-MGR), and two oceanographic research vessels, the 177-foot ocean-going Oceanus that will be replaced in 2021 by the NSF-funded, CEOAS-built 199-ft Taani; and the Elakha. Academic programs in CEOAS are interwoven with research and combine classroom excellence with experiential learning, including extensive field experiences in particular at sea.
The College has an annual budget of more than $80 million, with support coming from the National Science Foundation, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and other federal agencies. It has more than 100 faculty, 120 graduate students, and 700 undergraduate students.
