POSITION DESCRIPTION
Assistant Professor in Environmental Data Science
The University of California, San Diego invites applications from outstanding candidates for a tenure-track faculty position for a joint faculty appointment at the Halicioglu Data Science Institute (HDSI, https://datascience.ucsd.edu/) and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO, https://scripps.ucsd.edu/). The appointment will be at the Assistant Professor level. Successful appointees will have a track record of scientific accomplishments, potential for excellence in teaching, a commitment to university service and a commitment to support diversity, equity and inclusion at the university.
The ever-increasing amounts of data being generated by sensors, fieldwork, satellites, numerical simulations, etc., imply that environmental data science will be a crucial pillar of environmental research moving forward, with substantial funding from public agencies (NSF, DOE, DOD) and private donors. Environmental data science is highly interdisciplinary, requiring both deep knowledge of cutting-edge tools in statistics, machine learning and big data, along with an understanding of the relevant physics/chemistry/biology. UC San Diego is pursuing a strategy for advancing data science that builds upon its unique strengths in creating interdisciplinary research areas that span multiple disciplines and departments. Funded with a $75M endowment, the mission of HDSI is to explore the scientific foundations for the new field of data science. These foundations include both the principles, methods, and tools that will enable us to understand the nature of digital data, and also the intersections between this new field and existing disciplines of human inquiry. Since its inception four years ago, HDSI has made five joint faculty appointments across various disciplines while HDSI serves as the primary home of the faculty candidate for academic evaluation purposes. Another eight faculty members hold joint appointments at HDSI where another department is their home department.
We seek applicants with a forward-looking interdisciplinary data-driven and/or model-informed research vision who are interested in capitalizing on HDSI’s expertise in data analysis and on SIO’s unique history of environmental data acquisition and whose goal is to enhance the scientific and training mission within and across SIO’s three academic sections (Biology, Earth, Oceans and Atmosphere).
We seek candidates with a creative vision who can lead an interdisciplinary campaign to enhance the SIO scientific effort by harnessing the data revolution. In that context, we particularly encourage individuals with following demonstrated or potential desirable characteristics: (i) broad training in mathematics, computer science, and environmental/Earth/atmospheric/ocean sciences; (ii) ability to work across research sections and promote interdisciplinary convergence; (iii) ability to apply and develop data science tools (statistics, signal processing, machine learning, empirical dynamics, data assimilation, etc.); (iv) interest in understanding the underlying science.
This position requires teaching of university student and a PhD or Advancement to Candidacy is required at time of application.
Competitive candidates will have a strong publication record and potential to build a vibrant research program supported by competitive research funding. Building on courses already in place at SIO and at HSDI, the successful candidate will be encouraged to create new, much needed courses that seek to match methods to problems in environmental data science at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
We understand that the COVID-19 pandemic may have had a substantial impact on academic productivity. In our academic hiring processes, we will be keeping this in mind as we consider achievement relative to opportunity. We encourage you to reflect on constraints on opportunity in your field that were caused by the events of the pandemic and where applicable, to discuss your achievements in this light.
The mission of HDSI is to explore the scientific foundations for the new field of data science as a hub for research and teaching in the emerging area and its interactions with existing disciplines of human inquiry. SIO is a world-renowned center of solid Earth, planetary, oceanographic, biological, and atmospheric research with over 200 principal investigators leading research programs. HDSI and SIO are a part of the University of California, San Diego, which is one of the top research universities in the world. We are committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student community.
