APL is a research unit at the University of Washington. Our research expertise includes ocean physics and engineering, ocean and medical acoustics, polar science, environmental remote sensing, and signal processing. The STEM Development Program Coordinator will be independently responsible for the implementation, execution, and further evolution of the US Navy-funded DID-NOW: Developing an Inclusive and Diverse Naval Oceanographic Workforce program that will provide a Summer undergraduate research experience at APL. In addition, the incumbent will be charged with pursuing and overseeing other grants, contracts and budgets, and has delegated authority to make decisions on behalf of those programs with oversight for all operational and programmatic responsibilities, evaluations and program sustainability. Outreach activities will be a substantial component to this position, through creating solid partnerships internally within APL, across the University of Washington, and with many external organizations including the US Navy, NASA, NSF, and NOAA. The expectation of the incumbent is to expand APL’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Access (DEIA) and STEM education activity, develop programming that is meaningful, and grow participants in STEM through a robust set of offerings, with an overall goal of establishing a high-quality higher ed experience through development activities. This position will be responsible for identifying and obtaining funding, working towards building out a portfolio that provides sustained salary support, and will also be charged with serving as a PI for all awards, and ensuring that the programming developed bolsters APL’s STEM and DEIA education mission. By the end of year two, the position must be fully sustained by funding its incumbent has successfully secured.
Major duties and responsibilities:
Outreach, Prospecting & Expansion:
• Identify and pursue funding opportunities for APL STEM and DEIA education programs, with the goal of building a portfolio that provides consistent and sustained salary support for this position while advancing APL’s education offerings.
• Serve as lead PI for the awarded projects and oversee grant/contract responsibilities and operational management, setting strategy, project and budget management, and leading and supervising teams and projects to completion.
• Incorporate feedback/interests from all APL Departments through a Steering Committee with representation lab wide.
• Build out successful programming by integrating existing APL and UW programs for an enriched and cohesive experience for participants.
• Leading the development of curriculum appropriate for each programs’ STEM educational and developmental focus. This may include delivering core classroom style curriculum, hands-on instrument and shop tool operation, field research support, onboard research cruise vessel oceanographic techniques, or data science active learning experiences.
• Active collaboration with APL, UW programming campus-wide, and with external partners and agencies which will include: NSF, NASA, NOAA, Navy, local community colleges, regional and national universities, tribes and/or tribal technical support organizations.
• DID-NOW grant implementation and execution, with delegated authority to make decisions on behalf of the program.
• Overall program coordination, operations management and program evaluation.
• Coordination and integration of DID-NOW outreach, including within and across APL, with UW Campus programs, with external partners such as Navy organizations, regional and national universities, and Tribes or Tribal Technical Support Organizations.
• Develop mentorship, recruitment & training opportunities.
• Oversee internships, advertising, and application management.
• Ensure a robust student experience and cohort development.
Master’s Degree in Science, engineering, education, research, or related field and at least 4 years of academic or research experience with students from a range of educational and experiential backgrounds in a diverse higher education setting, with at least 2 of those years in STEM related work.
• Demonstrated commitment to serving diverse populations/communities representing a range of social, economic, cultural, ideological, racial, and/or ethnic backgrounds.
• Demonstrated success in grant awards.
• Successful candidate must be an excellent communicator (verbal and written).
• Skills in program and budget management, as illustrated by the ability to set priorities and manage multiple projects and competing deadlines.
• Problem-solver able to successfully navigate a complex organization and identify creative solutions.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
Other qualities candidates may possess to enhance application:
• Experience or familiarity with a soft money institute.
• Experience or familiarity with Navy or military programs or organizations.
• Familiarity with supervising and mentoring students.
• Experience or familiarity with best practices in student research exposure.
