Scientific Research Computing Specialist – Rutger University

The Earth System Modeling (ESM) Lab in the Department of Environmental Sciences at Rutgers University is seeking a scientific computing specialist to carry out software engineering and user support in the ESM lab. The main responsibilities will be to assist in the development of ocean circulation and climate models, and to configure and conduct computer simulations using numerical models such as the NOAA-GFDL Modular Ocean Model (MOM6) and the NCAR Community Earth System Model (CESM). The successful applicant is expected to assist in coupling diverse components of an earth system (e.g., physics and biogeochemistry models), manage observational and simulated datasets, including their transfer, storage and manipulation; develop and apply pre- and post-processing software; curate and disseminate software and model products; and provide compute cluster support.

Requirements: The position has a minimum requirement of a Bachelor’s degree. A Masters or Ph. D. in a related field (oceanography, atmospheric sciences, computer science, engineering, physical sciences) is preferred. Candidates should have good quantitative / computational skills, and a working knowledge of FORTRAN, python and the Unix environment.

Desired skills: Background in numerical methods in Earth Science and experience with climate models is strongly preferred. Experience with high-performance and cloud computing environments and knowledge of climate datasets is desired.
