Research Associate – Imperial College London
This project will use real-time field measurements from a working university computer laboratory alongside theory and numerical simulations to develop a state-of-the-art modelling and design tool, [D*]stratify, which will predict and control thermally stratified environments. You will measure, analyse, model, and control the temperature in the computing laboratory using a network of sensors and controllers linked to a building management system. The modelling will involve carefully accounting for available energy in the context of buoyancy-driven mixing and stratified turbulence. The project is a unique opportunity to combine fundamental understanding of turbulent mixing and flow energetics with recent advances in sensor technology and automated systems for solving and optimising partial differential equations. You will work in the Fluid Mechanics Section of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering alongside researchers undertaking complementary experimental and numerical work on areas including urban fluid mechanics, wave mechanics, fluid-structure interaction and ocean mixing.
Duties and responsibilities
You will work with College controls engineers, ICT (Information & Communication Technologies) engineers and an external partner to design and install sensors to monitor the environment of an operational computer laboratory. Theoretical analysis and modelling will be undertaken in collaboration with a second Research Assistant/Associate, who will focus on the computational aspects of the work. Your work will be disseminated at international conferences, incorporated in open-source software, and published in prestigious journals in fluid mechanics and building physics. You will also contribute to the supervision of UG, MSc and PhD research students in the group and to the development of future research and industry funding proposals.
- PhD (or equivalent) in engineering, physics or applied mathematics.
- Experience taking measurements from laboratory experiments or field work.
- Understanding of buoyancy-driven flows and/or building physics/ventilation.
- Good written and oral communication skills.

Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant within the salary range £36,045 – £39,183 per annum.
