The Programming in Earth Science Classrooms Educational workShop (PECES) is now accepting applications. Early-career scientists in Earth, ocean, and atmospheric sciences with an interest in teaching are encouraged to apply. Please share this announcement widely.

This workshop will take place in Cambridge, MA, on January 12–14, 2026. 

PECES is a workshop on the effective sharing and teaching of coding practices and the use of large open-source data. This workshop will equip participants to confidently incorporate best coding practices into their curricula, bringing the most remote areas of the world into the classroom! Chosen applicants will travel to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where the workshop will take place, and spend three days in structured interactive coding sessions and loosely structured brainstorming, networking, and social sessions. 

Focus areas of the interactive coding sessions will include (1) best practices for introducing programming to Earth, ocean, and atmospheric science students, (2) effectively accessing and analyzing large open-source data and models in classroom environments, and (3) sharing and compiling resources for teaching.

The application requires a CV, two 200-word responses on how this workshop would further the applicant’s career, and a short description of the need for travel funding. Please note that travel funding will be available to a limited number of participants. Applicants also have the option to propose a discussion topic to lead. 

Applications are due Sunday, November 9, 2025, at 23:59 EST. The planning team will do their best to contact applicants by Monday, November 17.
