Postdoctoral Scholar, Science and Engineering Postdoctoral Enrichment and Development (SEED) – University of Washington
See yourself at APL!
The Applied Physics Laboratory is a research unit at the University of Washington. Our research expertise is in ocean physics and engineering, ocean and medical acoustics, polar science, environmental remote sensing, and signal processing. We conduct research and development that is sponsored by a variety of federal and state agencies, and take great pride in our long-standing status as a US Navy-designated University Affiliated Research Center (UARC). Our work takes place not only on the University of Washington campus and medical centers, but in field locations around the world – at sea, in the air, and on polar ice caps. We apply rigorous scientific inquiry and engineering excellence in pursuit of solutions to important problems for the good of our region, nation, and world.
Diversity is a core value at University of Washington and the Applied Physics Laboratory shares this commitment. We are focused on building and sustaining an inclusive and equitable research environment for all students, staff, and collaborators. We believe every member on our team enriches our community by exposing us to a broad range of ways to understand and engage with the world, identify challenges, and to discover, design and deliver solutions.
APL-UW SEED Postdoctoral Scholar Program (SEED = Science and Engineering Enrichment and Development) seeks applicants with research interests in Oceanography, Ocean Engineering, Underwater Acoustics, Marine Robotics, Marine Energy, Polar Science, Medical Ultrasound, Signal Processing, and Autonomy. Positions will contribute to funded project-specific research while furthering their own education and training. These are full-time (100% FTE) appointments, with expected terms of two years subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funding.
Promotional and further developmental opportunities following the completion of the post doc appointment are possible subject to availability of funds and the demonstration of an interest in developing independent research initiatives during the course of the post doc appointment. Other opportunities include availability to collaborate with scientists across the UW campus as well as other research universities via a consortium of about 15 of the leading STEM PhD-producing institutions in the US.

Application Instructions
Each applicant is expected submit a research proposal and goals within the broad program areas of the participating APL departments: Air-Sea Interaction & Remote Sensing, Acoustics Department, the Center for Industrial and Medical Ultrasound, Electronics and Photonics Systems, Environmental Information Systems, Ocean Engineering, Ocean Physics, and the Polar Science Center. The proposal should be no more than 5 pages, double-spaced, excluding bibliography and figures, describing research to be pursued during a two-year tenure at the University of Washington.
We encourage you to contact one or more of our researchers in your area of research. This is not a condition of applying. Further information on current research at APL, by department and principal investigator, can be found at: APL-UW Departments
In addition to the proposal each applicant will provide:
- A curriculum vitae, and
- A publication list
Candidates continuing through the evaluation process will be given an opportunity to interact directly with potential APL mentors in networking events. Selected finalists will be invited to present their research proposal in seminar. For priority consideration submit completed application by September 15th, 2022.
