Drs. Roger Samelson and Larry O’Neill at Oregon State University (OSU) seek a full-time postdoctoral research associate with a background in atmospheric sciences, physical oceanography, or a related field. The postdoc will work as part of research team on a federal grant funded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) that provides support for the OSU component of the Earth Ventures Sub-orbital S-MODE (Sub-Mesoscale Ocean Dynamics Experiment) program. S-MODE is a multi- investigator, multi-platform program that is using coordinated deployment of newly-developed in situ and remote sensing technologies to provide an unprecedented view of the physics of submesoscale eddies and fronts and their effects on vertical transport in the upper ocean, and to test the hypothesis that submesoscale ocean dynamics make important contributions to vertical exchange of physical, chemical and biological variables in the upper ocean. The postdoctoral scholar will collaborate with Drs. O’Neill and Samelson and with other members of the S-MODE research team on the analysis of sub-mesoscale ocean dynamics and air-sea interaction processes, using a combination of S-MODE observations, theory and numerical simulations. This position offers an excellent opportunity to pursue independent, mentored research, to strengthen analytical and writing skills, and to publish scientific papers. The postdoc will also be able to interact with a rich, multidisciplinary community of scholars, and to attend seminars, workshops and scientific conferences.

Qualifications include: a Ph.D. in atmospheric sciences, physical oceanography, or a related field, completed prior to postdoctoral appointment start date; strong quantitative skills and experience with data analysis or mathematical modeling; strong writing skills and experience with submission of manuscripts to academic journals; demonstrated ability to work both collaboratively as part of a research team and independently. One-year commitment required, with position renewable for a second year.
