Postdoctoral researcher on the role of eddies in the Southern Ocean

Deadline: March 15th, 2020

GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel is a foundation of public law jointly financed by the Federal Republic of Germany (90 %) and the state of Schleswig-Holstein (10 %) and is one of the internationally leading institutions in the field of marine sciences. Currently GEOMAR disposes over an annual budget of approx. 80 million Euro and has approx. 1000 employees.

The research unit Ocean Dynamics is looking for a

Postdoctoral researcher
on the role of eddies in the Southern Ocean

starting as soon as possible.

We seek an individual excited about climate science and modelling, keen to investigate Southern Ocean and eddy mixing processes in a warming climate. The position focuses on understanding the role of mesoscale eddies in (i) redistribution of meltwater, (ii) uptake of heat and trace gases, and (iii) propagation of climate signals across fronts in the Southern Ocean. The key tool to address these topics is a global climate model with a regionally refined ocean grid simulating an eddy-rich Southern Ocean. By addressing the above topics the postdoctoral researcher will contribute to the overarching BMBF-funded project PalMod II “From the Last Interglacial to the Anthropocene – Modeling a Complete Glacial Cycle”.

The Ocean Dynamics group at GEOMAR has long-standing experience in ocean modeling from coarse-resolution global models to regionally sub-mesoscale resolving embedded nests. We contribute to global climate modelling at GEOMAR focusing on the role of mesoscale eddies. Our main interest is in processes determining Atlantic variability of the 20th and 21st century. We are an engaged group enthusiastic about identifying mechanisms driving ocean and climate variability and developing new modeling solutions.

Your responsibilities:

  • running numerical experiments with an established global climate model
  • configuring a regionally refined Southern Ocean
  • conducting original research with this model analyzing large data sets
  • interpreting and publishing the research in international journals

Your qualifications:

  • a university degree (MSc) and PhD in ocean or climate physics or a related field
  • strong background in physical oceanography and ocean modeling
  • demonstrated experience in publishing
  • proficiency in spoken and written English

The following additional qualifications are beneficial:

  • knowledge of climate processes of the Southern Ocean on long timescales, the last glacial to the present
  • knowledge of model parameterization of mixing and eddy processes
  • experience with the NEMO ocean model and AGRIF nesting
  • expertise in running ocean/climate models on HPCs
  • skills in using Python, Fortran, shell scripting

The position is available for a funding period until January 31, 2023. The salary depends on qualification and could be up to the class 13 TVöD-Bund of the German tariff for public employees. This is a full-time position. The position can be split. The fixed-term contract shall comply with Section 2 Paragraph 1 of The Act of Academic Fixed-Term Contract (German WissZeitVG).

GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel seeks to increase the proportion of female scientists and explicitly encourages qualified female academics to apply.

GEOMAR is an equal opportunity employer and encourages scientists with disabilities to apply. Qualified disabled applicants will receive preference in the application process.
