Oceanographic Data Scientist – MetOcean Solutions

We are currently seeking a talented Oceanographic Data Scientist to join our Research and Development team. MetOcean Solutions, a division of New Zealand’s MetService, is a science-based consultancy and forecast supplier providing specialist numerical modelling and analytical solutions in meteorology and oceanography. With offices across New Zealand (Auckland, New Plymouth, Raglan, and Wellington) and in Sydney, Australia (MetraWeather) our international team works on projects and data analysis world-wide. We passionately believe in rigorous scientific method and in applying the latest information technology to data services. MetOcean occupies several niche marine consultancy and service roles and has a rapidly growing forecast and hindcast sector.

We are seeking a self-starter to work in our operational environment that includes aspects of research and development. Your role will be to provide technical support in the collation, quality control, processing, and archiving of existing oceanographic observational datasets to assist in research projects and the operations within the MetOcean Research and Development team. This role will initially contribute to the nationwide Moana research project (www.moanaproject.org), in collaboration with the main oceanographic institutions in New Zealand.

This position would be primarily based in Raglan with some opportunity to work from other offices in the future.  Raglan is a small beach side town on the West Coast, just a short drive west of Hamilton or a two-hour drive south of Auckland. This is a fantastic opportunity to work in a growing environment with an interesting and challenging mix of applied research, science and technology. You must have a post-graduate qualification (minimum of M.Sc) in a relevant physical oceanography or related field.

Qualifications: Minimum of Master’s degree in physical oceanography or related field

In order to apply you must have the following skills and experience:

  • Minimum of Master’s degree in physical oceanography or related field
  • Experience working with large geophysical datasets
  • Proficiency in Python and Netcdf
  • Excellent people skills for liaising with project partners
  • Willingness to work in an operational setting
  • Willingness to travel domestically to meet with partners
  • Good written and oral communication skills in English
  • Enjoys being part of a team that moves quickly with minimal supervision
  • An ability to prioritise tasks and manage projects in a timely fashion
  • Supportive and positive attitude with a curious mind that encourages exploration

The following would be beneficial, but are not essential:

  • Previous experience working with oceanographic datasets
  • Knowledge of oceanographic data quality control practices
  • Experience in operational oceanography or ocean observing systems
  • Knowledge of coastal ocean dynamics through modelling or observing
  • Experience with Matlab
