GST Altimetry Scientist position – NOAA
Global Science Technology, a growing scientific and high technology firm, is seeking an experienced Radar Altimetry Scientist to support a major NOAA contract located in College Park, MD.
Duties:
The successful candidate will work with a group of oceanographers, geophysicists, radar altimetry scientists, and software developers at the Satellite Oceanography and Climatology Division (SOCD) under the NOAA Center for Satellite Applications and Research (STAR).
Responsibilities:
The individual in this position will be a member of the Sea Surface Height Science Team and the Jason/Sentinel-6 Project Team, responsible for the development and implementation of satellite altimetry processing algorithms and scientific research for new ocean applications. This position includes support for the calibration and validation of satellite sea surface height, wave height, and ocean surface wind products. The candidate will work with GNSS-Reflectometry, commercial data, Sentinel-6, Jason-3, Sentinel-3, CryoSat-2, and SWOT data.
Required Qualifications:
- MS or PhD in a quantitative field of research (Physics, Math, Statistic, Remote Sensing, Oceanography, Meteorology) completed by date of hire
- Solid quantitative educational background (fundamental Physics, Math, Statistics)
- Strong scientific analytical skills with detail-oriented working style
- Proficiency with Unix/Unix scripts and Python.
- Proven list of deliverables (peer-reviewed publications, derived products, etc.)
- Willingness and ability to conduct independent research (from problem definition to technical solution to documentation in peer-reviewed literature) while being a team player
Desired Optional Skills:
- Experience with and/or satellite ocean data products.
- Familiarity with altimetry sensors and retrieval algorithms and/or GNSS-Reflectometry
- Proficiency with data handling and configuration management, and Fortran, Matlab, or IDL programming.
- Familiarity with the Radar Altimeter Database System.
