Postdoctoral research in Southern Ocean biogeochemistry at the University of Colorado, Boulder

We invite applications for a postdoctoral researcher to participate in observational and modeling studies of Southern Ocean biogeochemistry. This effort is part of a larger study of the impact of climate change on Southern Ocean circulation, carbon cycling, and ecology. The Southern Ocean plays an important role in the global climate system, absorbing a substantial fraction of excess heat and anthropogenic carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, and supplying critical nutrients to the subtropical thermocline. It is also a region of large potential change in future climate simulations.

The postdoctoral researcher will join an interdisciplinary group of scientists in Boulder conducting research on Southern Ocean biogeochemistry: Prof. Nicole Lovenduski at the University of Colorado, Dr. Colm Sweeney at NOAA’s Earth Science Research Laboratory, and Dr. Britton Stephens at NCAR’s Earth Observing Laboratory. Specific job activities will be influenced by applicant interests, but may include analysis of a 10-year record of pCO2, DIC, and carbon isotopes measured from the R.V. L.M. Gould in the Drake Passage; modifying and running ocean biogeochemistry models for comparison to data and assessment of future projections; and analysis of data from a new underway atmospheric O2 system on board the Gould.

A Ph.D. in the earth sciences, applied math, or the physical, biological, or chemical sciences is required. Training in oceanic sciences and modeling is strongly preferred, and strong quantitative and statistical skills are necessary. The initial appointment will be for one year, with opportunity for renewal. For additional information, please contact Nicole Lovenduski <nicole.lovenduski@colorado.edu>.

Applicants must apply online at: <https://www.jobsatcu.com/applicants/jsp/shared/position/JobDetails_css.jsp?postingId=281193>, and submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and names of at least 3 references. Review of applications will begin on April 1st, and continue until the position is filled

This workshop is designed for graduate students and post-docs who are interested in pursuing academic careers in the geosciences. The workshop will provide a stimulating and resource-rich environment in which to explore important facets of an academic career. Three main goals of the workshop are for participants to become more effective teachers and scholars, stronger candidates for academic jobs, and better prepared future faculty members who will be able to make a quick and effective start in the next stage of their academic career. We welcome participants from across the geosciences (geology, oceanography/marine science, meteorology/atmospheric science, climate science….. )

The workshop program will include faculty panels on academic careers, presentations on various topics related to teaching, course design, designing effective teaching lessons, moving your research forward in new settings, teaching statements and research statements, and other aspects of the academic job search and more. The workshop will begin on the evening of Wednesday, June 27, 2012, and will conclude after dinner on Friday, June 29, 2012. Optional additional workshop sessions will be held on Wednesday afternoon, June 27 and in the morning on Saturday, June 30.

The registration fee for the workshop is $150; the registration fee for participants who are local (and will not need housing or breakfast) is $50. Our funding will provide housing (double-occupancy room for three nights), food, and workshop materials. To be supported by these funds, a participant must be either a US citizen, a permanent resident, or in the employ of a US institution. If you don’t meet these requirements and are interested in participating in this workshop at your own expense, please contact the workshop conveners. In cases where the cost of attending this workshop would cause financial hardship, you can apply for a stipend to help defray the travel and registration costs.
