The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at the University of Colorado@Boulder invites applications for a Research Associate, Postdoctoral, to study atmosphere-ocean interaction in the Kuroshio-Oyashio extension (KOE) region.,The project entails using observations and model experiments to better understand decadal changes in the KOE and their impact on the large-scale atmospheric circulation and its predictability. The successful applicant will design, conduct and analyze high-resolution atmospheric general circulation model (GCM) simulations to diagnose the response to sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies in the KOE region. The postdoc will also be involved in all aspects of this research as part of a team of atmospheric scientists and oceanographers, including Matt Newman and Michael Alexander (NOAA/ESRL/Physical Sciences Divison and CIRES), Young-Oh Kwon (Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, WHOI) and Claude Frankignoul (Université Pierre et Marie Curie and WHOI) and may spend some time at WHOI investigating the causes of oceanographic variability in the KOE. Experience with numerical models, including having conducted atmosphere, ocean or coupled GCM and/or mesoscale model simulations and the analysis of atmosphere and/or ocean data sets is desirable. The successful applicant will be located at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration /Physical Sciences Division (NOAA/PSD) in the David Skaggs Research Center in Boulder, and will therefore be required to obtain a NOAA clearance at the outset of the appointment. Desired start date for this position is September 1, 2011.
A recent Ph.D. in atmospheric science, oceanography, or a related field.
