Assistant Professor – Columbia University

The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences (DEES) of Columbia University (CU) seeks applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Oceanography. While most teaching will take place on the CU campus in New York City, the Department is affiliated with the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory (LDEO), which provides a rich and collaborative geoscience community with laboratory and graduate teaching space on its own campus in Palisades, New York. Our community seeks candidates who will continue to advance our commitment to diversity and inclusion in the geosciences. This DEES search is broadly focused on candidates with expertise in either chemical or physical oceanography and we welcome applications that would advance our research and teaching missions in either of these disciplines regardless of specific focal areas. For example, chemical oceanographers with expertise in one or more of the following areas: biogeochemistry, including, but not limited to, all aspects of carbon cycling; chemical tracers of ocean circulation; air-sea gas exchange; physical chemistry of seawater; chemical speciation, and other topics within the field of chemical oceanography are encouraged. Physical oceanographers with focal areas of coastal or open ocean research, including; energy transfer, fluid dynamics; boundary interactions including, but not limited to, expertise in the field of observational coastal dynamics, where there is interest in how human activities and/or climate change will impact coastal resilience and hazard exposure, are also encouraged to apply. Candidates with an interest in the development and use of novel methods and technologies are encouraged, in order to carry on the tradition of innovative observations and collaborative ocean science within the department and the broader LDEO community of scientists. The successful applicant is expected to develop a high-impact research program that is focused on problems of global significance, and to demonstrate strong potential for effective and inclusive teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels. The ideal candidate will conduct research and teaching that complements existing faculty interests and strategic priorities in DEES and at LDEO.
