Data Science in Oceanography – Summer Program for Undergraduate Students
Data Science in Oceanography
Summer Program for Undergraduate Students
In-person at the University of Washington, Seattle, Washington
Aug 8th — Aug 26th, 2022
The School of Oceanography at the University of Washington, the eScience Institute, and OceanHackWeek are excited to announce an undergraduate summer program, “Data Sci-ence in Oceanography.” Participating students will interact closely with faculty and gradu-ate student mentors to develop and advance research projects revolving around oceano-graphic data analysis. The students will participate fully in the OceanHackWeek program (https://oceanhackweek.github.io/ohw22/), where they will gain hands-on experience in data science techniques. The students will also learn about scientific writing, careers in oceanography and related fields, tips for gaining additional undergraduate research experi-ence, and an overview of the graduate school admissions process. The program will orga-nize fun activities in the Seattle area, such as hiking and kayaking trips, exploring the city downtown, etc. On-campus housing, meals, and partial travel reimbursement will be pro-vided to undergraduate students.
Undergraduate students with programming experience and interests in learning about oceanography and data science are welcome to apply. The goal of the program is to pro-vide undergraduate students opportunities in contemporary data-driven research in oceanography and attract them to exciting possibilities of career paths in oceanography. We are particularly eager to provide research and mentoring opportunities to historically underrepresented groups in STEM and students with non-traditional backgrounds.
Please apply using the OceanHackWeek 2022 application form (https://form.jotform.com/ 221166776095160) and choose the regional satellite event “US Northwest (UTC-7) under-graduate program” in the Logistics field. Decisions will be sent out to applicants by the end of June. For questions about the undergraduate program, please email Dr. Georgy Manucharyan at gmanuch@uw.edu using “Data Science in Oceanography” as the subject.
