I attended the Ocean Science Educators’ Retreat this week in D.C., where I gave a presentation on our MPOWIR effort.

Interestingly, before my talk Russ McDuff (UW) presented results from a recent survey of graduate programs in oceanography.  Russ showed that women are steadily increasing their representation in all oceanography programs, expect for physical oceanography.  MPOWIR is based on the premise that our efforts need to focus on retention, not on recruitment, but this recent data made me rethink that premise.  It may be, however, that successful retention will aid recruitment.  Just a thought.
